Since 1967 we have awarded $3,000,000 in scholarships to youth pursuing a future in the agriculture industry. We believe assisting our industry’s future leaders in obtaining higher education is an investment in the future, and is an integral part of fulfilling our Farm Bureau mission. We urge every county Farm Bureau to recruit eligible youth to participate in our scholarship program.

The R. Flake Shaw Scholarship program awards:

  • Six individual university level scholarships for a four year period at $4,000 per year ($16,000 total per student)
  • Four individual community college scholarships for a two year period at $1,000 per year ($2,000 total per student)

Scholarships are awarded to rising freshmen who demonstrate:

  • The intention to pursue a career in agriculture or in an agriculturally-related field
  • Financial need
  • Satisfactory grades
  • An evident understanding of the agricultural and/or agribusiness community
  • Leadership potential
  • Preference is given to Farm Bureau members

Mr. Robert Flake Shaw, a native of Guilford County, N.C., served as Executive Vice President of the N.C. Farm Bureau Federation in 1940. In his honor, North Carolina Farm Bureau awards the R. Flake Shaw Scholarship to students pursuing higher education in an agriculturally related discipline.
