Young Farmer and Rancher Events
Young Farmer and Rancher Committee Meeting
The Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee members were able to enjoy the beauty and uniqueness of the mountains as they traveled to Western North Carolina for the conference, held March 7-9, 2008, in Asheville.
Throughout the weekend, members spent time in their subcommittees planning and discussing upcoming ideas and events for the Young Farmers and Ranchers organization. Also on the agenda were local farm tours. Members visited Taproot Dairy in Henderson County where they learned about the operation and the milking process, Hilltop Farm in Henderson County where they viewed apple orchards and equipment, and Apple Wedge Packers and Cider, where they learned about the fruit packing and cider making processes. They continued with tours of the Sorrell’s Creek Trout Farm and the Mountain Research Station, both located in Haywood County.
During this time of fellowship and fun, the members also enjoyed a special lunch provided by the Blackwater Grille in Henderson County and a delicious supper sponsored by the Haywood County Farm Bureau. Key speakers included Danny McConnell, president of the Henderson County Farm Bureau, and a representative from the Appalachian Sustainable Agricultural Project organization.
